August 21, 2020
As we begin this unprecedented school year, we want to thank you for your understanding and patience during our school closure. The Lawnside Reopening Committee worked diligently to develop a plan to restart school in the safest manner possible. The Plan includes various options for the district to consider such as In-person (students attend school or opt for remote instruc- tion), Hybrid (where some special needs students receive 1:1 therapeutic services and all other school students receive full remote instruction), and Fully Remote (all students receive remote instruction at home without any in school services).
We had anticipated restarting school utilizing our In-Person Plan. However, there has been mul- tiple conversations among the stakeholders of the Lawnside community as to what option should best be implemented given the current status of the virus. After much discussion, the Lawnside Board of Education does not feel comfortable bringing back a mass group of students at this time. Data has shown that schools throughout the nation that have opened perviously have had to immediately shut back down due to outbreaks among students and staff. Furthermore, the New Jersey Department of Health has issued more detailed guidance which outlines the need for schools to close for 14 days if 2 confirmed cases are present without a family connection. The Lawnside community has had 75 confirmed cases of COVID-19 with 1 documented fatality. Thus, for the health and safety of students and staff, I will be making a recommendation at the August 27, 2020 Board Meeting for our school to move to our Hybrid Plan which means all students will receive remote instruction during the day. Only students required to receive 1:1 therapeutic services will be scheduled to come into the building on an individual basis fol- lowing all required protocols for entry. We intend to implement the Hybrid Plan until Monday, November 9, 2020 at which time a re-evaluation will take place to determine if it is safe to tran- sition to our In-person Plan.
We will work with you to make sure your children continue to receive the quality instruction you have come to expect from the school district. The school year will officially begin for students on Thursday, September 3, 2020 and a Tentative Daily Student Schedule is accompanying this let- ter. All students should log into their 1st period class by 9:00 a.m. daily. Attendance will be taken and monitored. Breakfast and Lunch will remain free for all students during the 2020-2021 school year pending the return of the enclosed Household Information Survey. Our weekly food distribution process will continue on Wednesday’s from 12:00 pm - 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm - 6:00 pm starting Wednesday, September 9, 2020. Parents and students are invited to attend the Annual Back To School Bonanza on Saturday, August 29, 2020 from 12:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. Social distancing protocols will be in place for this event.
As the start of this school year will be different from other previous years, please feel free to con- tact me directly if you have any additional questions or concerns. Additionally, check our website for informational updates throughout the school year. As always, thank you for your support!
